A trimmed-down budget for the Wrenshall school district presumes, at least for now, relatively paltry aid from the Minnesota Legislature, a dip in enrollment, and other pessimistic outcomes in a so-called worst case scenario for the district's yearly finances. School board members unanimously approved on Monday a $6.79 million budget for the 2025-2026 fiscal year, which begins July 1. District leaders plan to foot that bill with a projected $6.77 million worth of total revenue and about $23,000...
Cooler, wetter weather is expected to punctuate a week of intense fire activity in the region. Since Sunday, massive fires have sprouted north and west of Duluth, and one fire, quickly doused, sprang up north of Big Lake, in St. Louis County. Carlton County remained largely fire-free as of Wednesday night. Four days of hot, dry weather Sunday and through Wednesday had firefighters battling at least three major, out-of-control wildfires in northeastern Minnesota. The Camp House and Jenkins Creek...
The young Cromwell-Wright Cardinals softball team has been quietly putting together a solid season. This past week the Cards picked up back-to-back wins over Floodwood and Two Harbors as they wrapped up their regular season with a 12-7 record. "I've been pleasantly surprised at how the season has gone," said Cards coach Kari Olesiak. "I knew we had some good softball players, but we lost some crucial players off last year's team; but our younger kids have stepped into their new roles nicely."...
Wins have been tough to come by for the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys lacrosse team this season. On Tuesday night the 'Jacks took on the Rocori Spartans in Cloquet for the second time this season and, for the second time, Rocori won, 6-5 this time. "I think overall the season is not quite what we had hoped for or expected," said CEC coach Luke Mehelich. "We've lost a lot of tight games this season, but we are seeing a lot of first-year guys stepping up and making plays." On Tuesday, the Lumberjacks...
Everyone knows someone living with diabetes. If you don’t, I can introduce you to people who I know live with this challenging disease. But I probably don’t need to, because diabetes affects over 38 million children and adults in the U.S., according to the American Diabetes Association. That’s 1 in 10 Americans. At my house, it’s one in two. Diagnosed with Type 1 at age 15, Patti has successfully managed and lived with diabetes for 46 years. I met Patti about 38 years ago, and we have...

For the first time in 20 years, the Cloquet boys basketball team will have a new coach. Joe Seymour, a 2004 graduate of Hayward High School in Wisconsin and a basketball supporter in the area, was approved Monday by the Cloquet school board to take the helm of the program. "I am very excited," Seymour said. "Cloquet is a great school and this is a great opportunity. Steve (Battaglia) did a great job of building a strong program and we are ready to go to work and keep it going." Seymour was an...
A $21 million expansion at Black Bear Casino Resort went live last week, with a celebratory ribbon cutting and tours on Thursday and a retirement party Friday. The expansion added 21,000 square feet to the existing Otter Creek Convention Center, in the form of eight meeting rooms plus a ballroom, spaces that wrap around the existing otter creek center. Bonus amenities include two private sound booths for phone calls or one-on-one meetings in the hallway. It is an investment in continued...
Walleyes keep me awake at night. I fall asleep just fine, but in the early morning hours, as I toss and turn, my mind churns through endless preparations for the upcoming walleye season. Are my reels spooled with fresh line? Is the boat gassed up? Are my hooks sharpened on all my cranks? I give up, and shut my alarm off well before the 3:45 a.m. intended wakeup time on the Minnesota walleye opener. It's time to rock and roll. The rods have been tied and re-rigged over the course of the week....
