  • Student essay: The Christmas Tree

    Carley Bjerkness

Traditions are not always something you notice; they are the little things that make your life so special. After taking the weekend and asking my family, I realize we have many. With Christmas coming right around the corner, my family and I were decorating, and that's when I realized the Christmas tree. We have had a real Christmas tree for as long as I can remember. Every year about a week after Thanksgiving, we pick a real tree from B&B Market. My siblings and I dress warmly in hats, gloves,...

  • History: After the 1918 fire, small blessings

    Carol Klitzke

he winter of 1918-19 was a challenge for the people of Cloquet. In a period of just a few hours on Oct. 12, 1918, wildfires destroyed thousands of homes, barns and businesses in Carlton County. The communities of Carlton, Barnum, and Cromwell did not burn, but the city of Cloquet burned to the ground, and almost all its residents lost their homes. Because Cloquet had a railroad line running through it and enough...

"You don't want to be a birder accused of stalking,” said Detroit Lakes birder Bill Henke. “We do have signs that we can have in our windows that say Christmas Bird Count, so that we can hold that up if people look at us suspiciously,” said his wife, Nancy...
